Radio Free Alice’s ‘Rule 31’ Marks a Milestone in Their Rapid Ascent

Melbourne’s burgeoning post-punk ensemble, Radio Free Alice, has unveiled their latest single, ‘Rule 31,’ a track that not only showcases their evolving sound but also symbolizes their meteoric rise on the global music stage.

The genesis of ‘Rule 31’ is as spontaneous as it is emblematic of the band’s relentless touring schedule. Frontman Noah Learmonth recounts, ‘Rule 31 came about during a soundcheck whilst on tour. The bassline came first and we just built it up from there.’ This impromptu creation was later refined in Connecticut, under the guidance of producer Peter Katis, renowned for his work with Interpol and The National.

The urgency embedded in ‘Rule 31’ mirrors the band’s rapid trajectory. From their humble beginnings in Melbourne’s local venues, Radio Free Alice has catapulted to international prominence. Their recent UK tour is a testament to this ascent, with six consecutive sold-out shows in London, culminating in a packed performance at the iconic Scala.

Their festival appearances have further solidified their reputation. A last-minute slot at the Reading and Leeds Festival drew an overwhelming crowd, underscoring their growing appeal. This momentum is set to continue with upcoming headline performances at Sydney’s Liberty Hall and Melbourne’s Meredith Festival in December. Additionally, the band is slated to support New York rockers Geese during their Australian tour in February 2026, with shows in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. Radio Free Alice’s discography reflects their dynamic evolution.

Their third EP, ‘Empty Words,‘ released in August, captures the raw energy that defines their live performances. Its predecessor, ‘Polyester,’ has amassed over 3 million streams since its 2024 release and secured the fourth spot on Rolling Stone AU/NZ’s Best Australian EPs of 2024.

The band’s accolades extend beyond streaming numbers. Their self-titled debut EP earned a nomination for Best Independent Punk Album or EP at the 2025 AIR Awards. Furthermore, they were featured in the Readers’ Choice category at the 2025 Rolling Stone AU/NZ Awards, highlighting their resonance with audiences and critics alike. As ‘Rule 31’ resonates with listeners worldwide, it stands as a beacon of Radio Free Alice’s journey—a journey marked by relentless creativity, electrifying performances, and an unwavering connection with their growing fanbase.
