Twisted Sister was a long-running American heavy metal band who achieved mid-’80s stardom with their controversial videos for “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock.” ∙ In 1982, after nearly a decade as a popular draw on the New York/New Jersey club circuit, Twisted Sister released Ruff Cuts, their first EP, on the UK’s Secret Records. ∙ Their debut LP, 1982’s Under the Blade, was produced by Pete Way of UFO, established a sizeable following in the UK, and earned the band a US deal with Atlantic Records. ∙ You Can’t Stop Rock ’n’ Roll, the group’s 1983 album, reached No. 14 on the UK Albums chart and produced the Top 20 UK single “I Am (I’m Me).” ∙ Stay Hungry, released in 1984, was the band’s breakthrough, reaching No. 15 on the Billboard 200 and selling over two million copies in its first year. ∙ Twisted Sister appeared in the 1985 comedy Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, performing their track “Burn In Hell.” ∙ In 2017, Rolling Stone named Stay Hungry on its list of the 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time.
