U2’s ‘Days of Ash’: A Stirring Anthem for Our Times

In a move that has both surprised and galvanized fans, U2 has unveiled ‘Days of Ash,’ a six-track EP that serves as a powerful commentary on contemporary global issues. Released on Ash Wednesday, this collection marks the band’s first original material since 2017’s ‘Songs of Experience.’

A Tribute to Lives Lost

The EP opens with ‘American Obituary,’ a hard-hitting track dedicated to Renée Good, a Minneapolis mother tragically killed during a protest against ICE operations. Bono’s lyrics paint a vivid picture: ‘Renee Good, born to die free / American mother of three.’ This song not only honors Good’s memory but also serves as a critique of systemic violence. Another standout is ‘Song of the Future,’ which pays homage to Sarina Esmailzadeh, a 16-year-old Iranian girl who lost her life during the 2022 protests. Bono’s poignant line, ‘Sarina, Sarina, she’s the song of the future playing in my mind,’ underscores the song’s emotional depth.

Global Collaborations and Poetic Resonance

‘Yours Eternally’ features collaborations with Ed Sheeran and Ukrainian musician Taras Topolia, blending voices to narrate the harrowing experiences of soldiers on the front lines. This track is a testament to the band’s commitment to global solidarity. The EP also includes ‘Wildpeace,’ a musical adaptation of a poem by Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai, read by Nigerian artist Adeola. This piece adds a layer of poetic reflection, emphasizing the universal longing for peace.

A Call to Action

In the accompanying fanzine, Bono articulates the urgency behind ‘Days of Ash’: ‘These songs were impatient to be out in the world. They are songs of defiance and dismay… because for all the awfulness we see normalized daily on our small screens, there’s nothing normal about these mad and maddening times.’ ‘Days of Ash’ is more than an EP; it’s a clarion call for awareness and action. U2 continues to leverage their musical platform to shed light on pressing global issues, reminding us of the power of art to inspire change.
